Photo of cat and mouse, published in Cumhuriyet, 8 February 1928, no. 1349, page 1.

English:
A Picture That People Will Learn From
While people and nations are at each other’s throats a cat and mouse whom nature created as one another’s enemy are getting along like siblings.

God created the cat and mouse as one another’s enemy. When a cat sees a mouse it catches it with a single paw, suffocates it after playing with it for a bit, and kills it. And when a mouse sees a cat, it takes a deep breath, and tries to save its life.
(?) God, people however are enemies to one another…

Photograph’s caption: A mouse living comfortably between the claws and beneath the mouth of a huge cat.

Comments:
Much like a certain genre of internet content from today, a realistic photograph of a cat and mouse cuddling could evolve into an opportunity for a light-hearted blurb about such an improbable friendship in the 1920s. Add some moralizing commentary to this “developing story” and you have yourself a whimsically entertaining yet thought-provoking fluff piece.

Although the photograph itself could be staged, the moral of the story, or rather, the lesson these animals are teaching us is nevertheless commendable: Even though the cat and mouse are mortal enemies they are able to see past their differences and find common ground. Thus, fellow human beings, as members of the same species, have no excuse to not get along.
